Summary/Abstract: The Romanian communist regime produced centralized media, characterized by the intertwining of censorship and propaganda and an extended economic control. Following the regime change, free publicity has taken over the place of socialist controlled publicity without transition. However, neither the new political actors nor the media had the basic knowledge, rules, and norms for operating a democratic press system. As a result, the press of the first years of the regime change featured a state of politicization, tabloidism, and commercialism.
