Summary/Abstract: Dinaric karst is characterized by the occurrence of many plant communities which are very interesting regarding their structures Unfavourable abiotic factors like strong winds; water regime and high summer and low winter air temperatures cause very pronounced and frequent changes in vegetation and it is very often that; in a relatively small area; appears a combination of plant communities from alpine and subalpine grasslands to developed coniferous or deciduous forests. One such area is the area of the Stitar Mountain. Up to date there is very little information on the composition of plant communities in the Stitar Mountain area; and the latest information is older than 30 years. Phytocoenological composition of the Štitar Mountain area in the past 20 years has suffered some changes caused mostly by human activity (deforestation; conversion of meadow ecosystems into agricultural fields; etc.). During the year of 2012; floristic composition study of the Shtitar mountain area was conducted and this research covered northern slopes of the Shtitar Mountain and its central plateau. Field investigations were conducted in three research plots; each measuring 200 m2 and each in different areas of the Shtitar Mountain. The total of three plant communities from different classes were recorded; of which two classes dominated in the Štitar Mountain as follows: Class of vegetation on limestone mountain meadows (Elyno - Seslerietea Br.. - Bl. 48) and class of deciduous broadleaf forest of all vegetation belts (Querco - Fagetea Br. - Bl. Et Vlieg. 37). The analysis of plant communities revealed that in the area the Shtitar Mountain existed several plant communities that were recognized as valuable by NATURA 2000 network.
