Summary/Abstract: The article gives preliminary results of archaeological research carried out by the expedition of the High Anthropological School on the medieval fortress of Ruino – Kartal-Kale (Bulgaria) dated by the epoch of the First Bulgarian Kingdom. The article provides general description of the site, including its topography, constructional peculiarities of defence and dwelling features, main categories of archaeological finds. The author gives a complete report on one of the closed dwelling complexes. They also give a preliminary chronological and historical interpretation of the site. The fortress is dated by IX-XI centuries. It was twice destroyed in the course of its life: during Svyatoslav’s wars (968-971) and during nomadic raids (first half of XI century).
