How to Preach to Children?

Summary/Abstract: After the II Vatican Council the Church felt the need to adapt the liturgy to the needs of different groups, especially of the youngest group, that is children. It is without doubt that in all Masses with the participation of children the homily has an important role, in which the word of God is explained. The fundamental question was: how to preach to children, in order that this commentary be understood by them? In order to achieve this purpose, the preacher must take into consideration the level of the intellectual and religious development of the child. Preaching to them should use a picturesque language, similar to the language of the Gospel. The preacher, in order to keep the attention of his listeners, must use examples taken from the world of child’s life and strengthen his message by the use of props. He cannot forget that his mission is to lead the youngest participants of the Mass to meet God in the liturgy and that his words should form a positive image of God.
