Summary/Abstract: This article focuses on the life and work of Julius Löwy (1885–1944), a German physician, extraordinary professor at the German University in Prague, and one of the first representatives of the medical field of occupational medicine in interwar Czechoslovakia. Within the context of his focus on issues of industrial hygiene and occupational diseases, special attention is paid to Löwy’s active involvement in proving that bronchogenic carcinoma is an occupational disease in persons long-term employed in the mining or processing of uranium ore in Jáchymov in Bohemia (so-called ‘Jáchymov miners’ disease’). Moreover, the article also documents his contribution to the scientific research of this occupational disease and his role in the drafting of proposals of effective hygienic and legal measures to protect and financially compensate persons exposed to conditions that increase the likelihood of this disease.
