Summary/Abstract: Mustaj Bey of the Lika is one of the most important characters of the borderland epic, and borderland epic is a separate oral narrative phenomenon of the Bosniak oral literature. The character, in line with new historicism approaches, was constructed in combination of historiographic, legendary and pure epic texts: the historical texts have been searching for historical prototypes, legends are dealing with its origin and epic texts are ‘followed’ his life on the frontier. Contrary never completely unravel historical mysteries and underdeveloped stories of legendary texts, is highly developed tradition of the epic singing of the borderland hero’s life. From the large number of songs, from virtually realistic moitivated procedures and actions, I construct a portrait of the hero, who has authority and unquestionable leader of a perfectly organized Udbina community, the hero of beginning and end of the epic, the hero and who is entitled to be absent from the battlefield. In this biography, emphasis was placed on life rather than death, the hero becomes an artist living and not struggle. Hence it is not surprising proportion of the small number of songs Mustaj Bey’s death: one in the Kosta Hörmann, two in the Luka Marjanović and five in the Milmann Parry’s Collection.
