The idea of this paper is due to the fact that nowadays we can notice an attempt among the scholars from Bucharest to reevaluate what is generally considered as “the Balkan heritage”. This attitude is by no means singular. One can mention the exhibition organized by 60 artists from different Balkan countries in Graz or Maria Todorova’s book The Balkans and the Balkan character. We tried to analyze as objectively as we could different perceptions and attitudes, from the demonization of this cultural space at the hands of the Western world, to the consciously biased and apologetic attitudes. Indubitably, such a complex and wide issue cannot be treated exhaustively in a mere article. This is why the analysis was carried out taking into consideration significant aspects from the work of Mateiu Caragiale, Ştefan Bănulescu and Mircea Cărtărescu. A chapter was dedicated to the Romanian written press, a chapter which we intend to elaborate on in a future paper.
