Summary/Abstract: Each historic moment has its own original way of connecting the real world with the one of fiction. Modemism, as one such mode, starts to shape itself towards the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. It emerges as a consequence of the newly arisen social changes and the ubiquous nature of development. Changes such as a speedy technological and industrial progress, an advancernent of science and secular thought, an increase of the urban population and literacy, changes in man's very vision of himself and world alter not only the thematics of prose and poetry, but also the methods and techniques of their composition. This paper presents a short survey of the modernist and postmodernist literary movements emergence, as well as their basic characteristics, with the emphasis on the literaiy and critical work of T. S. Eliot and Virginia Wolf.
