Linguistic and visual ways of depreciating Polish national, cultural and religious symbols in internet memes

Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is the presentation of depreciating methods employed by the creators of internet memes of Polish national and religious symbols, and the answer to the question about the function of the depreciation. The author describes the mechanisms of depreciation on a linguistic level, indicating, among others, the collision of solemnity with commonness, shocking with the use of vulgarisms, violations of spelling rules, playing verbal-textual games introducing the contrast between high and low culture and parody of patriotic texts. The role of a graphic element in depreciation is presented, treating it not just as an illustration of the verbal part, but also its complement, apposition, without which the interpretation of message would not be possible. Considerations are ended with discussion of examples of the use of memes in important public discussions.
