Summary/Abstract: In the article, the author describes the negotiation of meaning in teaching the Polish language. She emphasizes the role of textbooks in the teaching process and discusses the difficulties arising from the analysis of the image of Poles in these textbooks. She also stresses the advantages of the negotiation of meaning in a foreign language classroom and characterizes the relation between the outcome of the negotiations and the interlocutors’ social, cultural and psychological background.
