Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes some of the manuscripts of the Vilna Gaon, Elijah ben Solomon Zalman (1720-1797). There are only a handful of autographic manuscripts of the Gaon but there are dozens of his commentaries in the handwriting of his students and recopied by later copiers. These manuscripts, stored in various archives with microfilm copies in the National Library of Jerusalem, were identified as the basis of many of the Vilna Gaon’s published writings. Researching these manuscripts can shed light on how the books were printed, what changes might have taken place between the early copies and the printed editions.
