Summary/Abstract: This article briefly presents the characteristics of Wüster’s terminology – a normative and uninotional terminology - and tries to define the socio-economic, cultural and political framework that has determined the new orientations of the terminological theories and practices. If the traditional terminology is issued from the practical need of specialists to establish a type of communication where univocity and standardisation can guarantee success, the present terminology becomes, through a new theoretical framework and the descriptive nature of the work, a new discipline where the units effectively used in the specialized communication are analysed in their linguistic and communicative contexts. So the meaning of terms, potentially polysemous, is updated according to the pragmatic conditions of their use in discourse.
