Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on discussing the gramaticalization of the verb DO in english. To this extent, we propose an analysis starting from its status as a lexical verb in old English undergoing the traditional grammaticalization into a weak element in Middle English with a final transformation into a functional element devoid of semantic meaning which a mere tense carrier in modern English.
