Summary/Abstract: The economic and political interests of France in the Ottoman Empire were obviously increasing in the first half of the 18th century. The process of strengthening France’s positions in the Balkans was continuous, and a major role for securing the long-term presence of the country in the European Southeast was played by the system of consulates and vice-consulates which were being established in the larger administrative and business centres of the Empire. Two specific projects for opening up vice-consulates in the territories of Bulgaria were developed in the 1740s. The current publication presents and traces the fate of the project for French diplomatic representation in Plovdiv in 1747 launched by the Holy Congregation and the Royal Council in Paris.
