Summary/Abstract: The article analyses Walt Whitman’s volume “Leaves of Grass”. The main ideasemphasized by the author are: Whitman’s poetry is an invitation to explore the world as acondition to develop the aptitude to understand the Universe both as the vastness surrounding us and as an inner kosmos; his ability to place Man in the centre of his artand to identify with all sorts of people; the grandour and also tragism of the poet’scondition. The author concludes that “Leaves of Grass” is a challenge to the concept ofpoetic ideal and Whitman’s verses have a magnetic force and a passionate quality thatexcite imagination and earn a strong response
