Summary/Abstract: This article has attempted to depict the beginning of Vidin community history, and through it to make the acquaintance of the Jews in the city in the 16th – 18th centuries. This community was chosen because of the city’s location as a central trade crossroad and administrative-strategic center, with one of the most ancient Jewish communities on the Balkan Peninsula, in the corner of the Empire that ruled it. Their life in the periphery had advantages and disadvantages, related to the area: advantages, such as the chances of a livelihood, connected to a border area, where trade with other countries had developed and there was involvement with levying customs, because of the port on the Danube River. On the other hand, the disadvantage of the location was the danger resulting from the geographical proximity to potential Wallachian, Austrian or Hungarian invaders.
