North African Events and the European Union’s Common Space of Freedom, Security and Justice

Summary/Abstract: The tense situation in the southern part of the Mediterranean has many adverse implications for international relations. One result of the North African developments is a high migration/asylum pressure from the region’s inhabitants on European Union member states. Even though the EU has been the target of such pressure for years—in what seems to be a natural outcome of migratory and refugee movements from poorer and endangered regions to stable areas—the present situation is indeed special.
