Summary/Abstract: This study is an approach to the Romanian monachal life on Mount Athos. The history of the holy places on Mount Athos was an important part in the History of the Romanian people for over fi ve centuries. Although the Romanians were the most important donors for the Athonite monasteries over centuries, they never expressed a wish to own a place of their own, as the Greeks, the Bulgarians, the Georgians, the Russians, and the Serbs did. The interest of creating ethnic settlements on Mount Athos became a reality in the 19th century. The Romanians settled in the great Athonite monasteries as well as in modest hermitages and secluded shelters, either built by them or purchased form Greek monks. Among the great Romanian fi gures who lived on Mount Athos, we list: Vasile from Poiana Mărului, Paisius Velichkovsky (who, although Ukrainian by birth, considered himself bound to the Romanian spirituality), Gheorghe from Cernica, Grigorie Dascălul, Irinarh from Horaiţa, Antipa from Calapodeşti, Nifon Ionescu, hieroschimonach Nectarie, schimonach Irinarh Şişman, Antipa Dinescu, Dometie Trihenea, Petroniu Tănase et.al. The most important Romanian settlements on Mount Athos (most of which were mere secluded hermitages) were Lacu and Prodromu. The author of this article presents a detailed history of the hermitage Prodromu with its moments of triumph and fall.
