Summary/Abstract: “True Fiction Pictures and Possible Films” is a record of conversations held by Kenneth Kaleta, a professor in Film studies, with Hal Hartley – one of the most original authors in American, independent cinema. The interviews, comprising the book, confront Kaleta’s interpretations with comments from the director himself. Kaleta is interested in the consecutive stages that the Hartley’s films go through during their creation. He asks about the background, style of work, the influence of each of the titles. Maciejewski points to the consequence with which carefully created style of each genre visible in Hartley’s work is subsequently discarded, ignored or ridiculed. And so in Hartley’s film, a detective story becomes a story of morality, a gloomy drama – an ironic comedy. That is how the title “true fiction” and “possible films” are born.
