Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses at identifying the directions and tempo of transformations of the internal structure of service sector in the context of building a knowledge-based economy. Explanation and understanding of the growing role of the services sector, knowledge-intensive services requires studies that will detect regularities that govern the process. The analysis covers eight countries of the European Union: Poland, Denmark, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The analysis covers the 2008–2016 period. In all studied economies, the importance of knowledge-based services is clearly increasing, although the process is characterized by different dynamics. Economy, in which services a high degree of utilization of knowledge are poorly developed countries (Poland, Lithuania, Latvia), characterized by a low level of innovation and of a knowledge-based economy is very slow.
