Summary/Abstract: In records and archives management, the use of appraisal methods and tools - and thus the selection of contemporary records - is useful, if not necessary, especially with regard to government records. However, we sometimes forget the values underlying the various processes of the records life cycle. Using the concepts of primary and secondary values of records, we will attempt to first establish strong foundations. In the second part, we will see how the various criteria are developed and implemented, given the impossibility of predicting future trends in research. We will look in turn at the intrinsic value of the record, different methodologies of appraisal and selection of records: macroappraisal, documentation strategy and collaborative selection process, and the articulation between the primary and secondary values of records. The third part proposes the necessity of taking into account objectivity and subjectivity in the appraisal process. The conclusion proposes a new role for the archivist.
