Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the study is the characteristics of the comparisons used in the Jacek Dehnel’s novel Matka Makryna. It is a colourful monologue of the main character, in which are reflected all the threads of her biography. A formal analysis of the comparisons has been performed, including the description of: 1) the types of comparisons identified with respect to their degree of fixation, 2) the ways the comparandum and the comparatum are linked together, 3) the order of both, 4) the degree of the comparisons complexity. The semantics of the comparisons has also been put under scrutiny and revealed the title character’s peculiarity of thinking and her imagination, emerging from the comparisons: concretized, settled both in the peasant and gentry reality, with explicitly present component of sacrum.
