Summary/Abstract: Within the structure and dynamics of present crimes, there stands out the species of profit driven crimes. This is no recent criminological concern, but is rather known as an elementary category of the criminal phenomenon. Despite this, the relevance that this type of crime has within organized crime groups entails new reasons for its research, as well as perspectives that have not been approached by traditional methods. The present study aims at analyzing the changes in form that profit driven crimes have had along their evolution, starting from what has been called predatory crimes, passing through enterprise crimes and up to what today is called, by a less fortunate choice of terms, commercial crimes. It seems that a new perspective in the matter is necessary, since criminology may have reached its limits in an effort to rationalize the phenomenon. A legitimate question therefore arises: is criminology the best way to study this type of crimes or should it (nobly) give way to another approach? The first science to qualify for a different perspective seems to be the economics. The article displays the reasons for which such a vision is able to bring extra understanding in a field which is vital for the consistent development of current society.
