Summary/Abstract: The study aims to elucidate the mechanisms that made it possible for the medieval Danse Macabre theme to reappear in the German Romantic art imagery, and to describe the characteristics of these late creations, starting from the examples provided by the works of Anton Falger and Georg Kneipp. The autochthonization undergone by the Danse Macabre (illustrated by Anton Falger’s three cycles displayed in churches and mortuaries in his native land), a phenomenon by which the theme is situated in a particular time and space, is potentiated by the need for individualization – including one’s own figure in the story told by means of images. Georg Kneipp chooses to insert, among the scenes of his Danse Macabre, an identitary one (a self-portrait and the portraits of his relatives), reminding of the memorial panels in fashion during the 17th-18th centuries
