Summary/Abstract: Perceived, until not long ago, as a local threat, organized crime turned, in the 21st century, into a very dangerous international phenomenon because of the negative effects it produces on all the aspects of political, economic, social, military and cultural life. Organized crime represents a direct threat to the internal, regional and global security of the states, contributing to compromising the rule of law and the integrity of democratic institutions. In order to be able to cope with this global challenge it is important to know the evolution and the trends of the organized crime phenomenon, to the benefit of the rule of law and its values.
