Summary/Abstract: This paper sets out to look at interpreting history from theperspective of the interpreter’s ‘visibility’. The concept of visibility isunderstood in a broad sense as a combination of physical presence, a distinct voice in the interpreted speech, influence, and status recognition in the public space. We are thus trying to ascertain the link between the various parameters that define the interpreter’s work and their complementarity. The last section of the article analyses the technical progress and ethical changes that took place during the 20th century, as well as their impact on the image of the interpreter today.
