Summary/Abstract: This text is based on the author’s PhD-thesis that aims ro reconstuct the image of the social impact of the new media (telegraph, telephone, phonograph, radio) in the second half of the nineteenth and in the beginning of twentieth century based on the journalistic opinions about these media. One of the common elements of this discourse was the notion of distance. The thesis presents the media-related expectations and fears of the society through the evolution of this term. Its conclusion is that media do have an impact upon the world view of a society, which builds a constant need for developing new media.
