Summary/Abstract: The development of technology and consumer needs contributed to the increase in the sales of functional foods in international exchange. Such food is not clearly defined and various food products fall into this category. The aim of the article is to examine the definitions and characteristics of functional foods and the market for such products. Research on functional foods refers to the concept and divisions of this food, its impact on human health and the conditions for ensuring consumer safety. The basic research method is the analysis of reports on the functional food market and statistical data as well as literature studies. Changes on the functional food market depend on the progress of research on food products and production technologies as well as pro-health behavior of consumers.
