Summary/Abstract: “Following the way of the novel from Cervantes to Proust, from Proust to the end of the twentieth century, he starts an expedition in the trail of the Self that seems to vanish from the novel.” Iván Sándor is not only a writer, but he often and with pleasure deals with the theory of the novel. His volume of essays draws a parallel between the European novel-tradition and the progress of the personality’s appearance and erosion, touching the problem of the peculiar phase shift of the Hungarian novel as well.
