Summary/Abstract: This paper studies the social and legal background of public constructions of antique Rome in the era of the Roman Republic. Being a financial lawyer, I was intrigued to find out more about the ancient rules of using up public funds and what corruptive and cultural influences shaped these procedures. I was also interested in finding similarities between past and present public procurement practices. In my work, bedsides the original sources, I used the monographs and summative studies of contemporary authors as well as my own expertise acquired as a public procurement consultant.
