DEVELOPMENT OF EARLY PREVENTION MECHANISMS AND INTERVENTIONS OF PEER VIOLENCE AT SCHOOL

Summary/Abstract: Presence of different forms of violence in adult relationships, media, and entertainment contents, affects the elevated level of tolerance to violence. Violent behavior models find a suitable 97 ground for their implementation, especially with children of elementary school age. Children of this age mostly learn by copying adult behavior models. Because of these reasons, children are often victims of violence, and often themselves behave violently to their peers, but to adults as well. By realizing the growing presence of peer violence, Association ‘Leptir’ Bugojno, In Foundation and a group of pedagogies of elementary schools has started a project ‘Stop peer violence in schools’ in Central Bosnia Canton. Three project’s goal is to lessen the occurrence of peer violence in schools through the development of early prevention mechanisms, protection, and intervention in cooperation with the system institutions and the wider community. In order to adequately approach resolving this problem in schools, originally a research was made. With the same, we wanted to research the growth of peer violence among peers in elementary schools, and to establish the connection between the growing violence with the present state in society, as well as with the lack of content related to prevention of peer violence which should be integrated into school curriculum and school programs. The subject of the research implied analyzing the presence of peer violence, peer violence ocurring forms, and incidence of peer violence in elementary schools of Bugojno and Travnik municipalities. In compliance with the results obtained through research it can be concluded how peer violence among elementary school children is present in its different ocurring forms. Based on the results of the research a planned and systematic activity was made with the aim of developing programs of early prevention and adequate intervention in a school environment and wider community. The program indicates to the essential cooperation of students, parents, local community and system’s institutions. Due to the involvement of all members of the school community and system institutions, this program has become possible to be applied in all schools in Bosnia snd Herzegovina and wider.
