Summary/Abstract: This year the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies of the Faculty of Philology, Vilnius University, is celebrating its tenth anniversary. As compared to the other departments of the University, which have a history of several decades or more, this anniversary is only the first milestone to have been reached. Yet its importance for Lithuania’s restored independence is none the less significant. The founding of the Department specialising in translation and interpreting was just an urgent response to the vital needs of the new democracy. Although the Department is young, it has already trained more than 200 translators and interpreters, who work in different areas of politics and business as well as in all the institutions and bodies of the European Union.
