Summary/Abstract: Practical training within tourism programmes taught at Bulgarian universities has an increasing role as a key component of the educational syllabus and creative activities. Student interest is drawn by the opportunities for a successful career in the hospitality industry where quality and innovation are a major contribution to professional achievement. This paper presents the challenges of traineeships in tourism that allow trainees to add innovative ideas to their knowledge of the hotel and restaurant business in the context of sustainable tourism development. It analyses part of the ideas, opportunities, and results related to traineeships in the European tourism market that the New Bulgarian offers to students in tourism. The difficulty of securing professionals for Bulgarian tourism which has become increasingly visible in recent years has proven the need for an active partnership between universities and businesses. Traineeships are part of this partnership since they offer a real-world environment enabling students to bind/compare theory to practice and acquire additional knowledge and skills in a dynamic, challenging, and interesting business.
