The changes that occurred in Perestroika time allowed abandoning socialist realist canons, introducing psychological-drama arts, protagonists from the lower class and the system criticism. Arbatova, as a representative of “different drama”, focused on the difficult situation of women in the Soviet times. In her works, she openly described the conditions of hospital maternity wards, uncovered the women’s souls hurt by abortion acts, spoke up for psychological support for women who lost their children. The author created female protagonists that were fighting for their right to personal freedom, giving them the possibility to choose their own way of living, often different from the current social norms.
