Summary/Abstract: This study proposes a socio-linguistic approach of greetings in contemporary Romanian language, in relation to the gender variable. Our research is part of a larger research project which attempts a description of the variations registered by the use of greetings in Romanian, in formal and informal communication contexts, in relation to three sociolinguistic variables: age, gender and level of education. At methodological level, we used the sociolinguistic survey based on a questionnaire which includes 13 open-answer discussion items. The corpus under analysis comprises 130 socio-linguistic investigations conducted in 10 Romanian urban centres (Bucharest, Cluj, Timişoara, Iaşi, Constanţa, Braşov, Sibiu, Baia-Mare, Suceava and Craiova), in the period January–December 2016. The resulting analysis indicates that the gender of subjects is responsible for differences at a functional level, as the respective greeting formulae display different degrees of affective load.
