Summary/Abstract: The need to use another approach to the study of the Bulgarian language is motivated in the text, conforming to criteria such as functionality, communication, complexity, scholarly, systematic, pragmatic. The emphasis is on functional literacy (such as the level of knowledge and skills, ensuring the proper functioning of the individual in a specific cultural environment), which identify the outcomes in teaching the Bulgarian language. It is motivated by understanding the presence of communication, precommunicative and synthetic exercises (content and structure) in the curriculum in view of the tasks of the Bulgarian language training. Functional methodological solutions are represented in support of the idea that so far the leading communicative approach does not rely on the unique and that its application in this way does not provide the expected results. The need to change the education paradigm by combining tradition and innovation is justified.
