AN ANALYSIS ON THE SELF-EFFICACY PERCEPTIONS OF MUSIC TEACHER CANDIDATES RELATED TO THE TRADITIONAL TURKISH MUSIC COURSES IN TERMS OF VARIOUS VARIABILITIES

Summary/Abstract: In this study, it was aimed to determine the self-efficacy perceptions of the music teacher candidates who continue their education in the Traditional Turkish Music (Traditional Turkish Folk Music / Traditional Turkish Art Music) courses which are included in the curriculum of Music Education Departments and Fine Arts Education Departments of Education Faculties.The universe of the study consists of the students who study in 26 Music Education Department affiliated to Higher Education Institution; the sample is made up of 4th grade students of 18 Music Education Department in Turkey. This study is a qualitative research to determine the self-efficacy perceptions of music teacher candidates regarding Traditional Turkish Music (TTM) lessons. In the study, “Self-Efficacy Perception Scale Related to Traditional Turkish Music Lessons” which was previously developed by researchers and tested for validity and reliability was used as a data collection tool in order to determine the self-efficacy perceptions of music teacher candidates. The scale was applied to 18 universities constituting the sample and the necessary data were collected from the 436 returned students and the statistical analyzes were made. As a result, the students’ profiles was tried to introduce by questioning the level of the self-efficacy perceptions of the TTM classes according to various variables. In the study, it was found that the self-efficacy perceptions were high in the items related to the basic music information related to TTM the students had taken for the lessons, but that the self-efficacy perceptions were low in the items related to the required information (mode knowledge, mode progression, rhythm and so on) related to TTM courses. Considering gender factors, self-efficacy perceptions are higher in men than that of in women; the self-efficacy perceptions of students in the general high school were higher than the students graduated from Anatolian Fine Arts High School graduation. The results indicates that the self efficacy perceptions of TTM classes differ according to university, instrument group, types of music that students and their parents prefer to listen to.
