Summary/Abstract: Idioms are fixed formulae, which both incorporate and reinforce common attitudes. They are frequently used in colloquial speech. A knowledge of this accumulated folk wisdom, expressed in idioms assumed to be known to all, is a significant component of the linguistic aspect of sociocultural competence. The main aim of this article is to represent the good methodological practices in the process of teaching Bulgarian idioms to foreign students. To ensure that students not only understand the idioms, but also learn to use them, the teacher should present idiom examples in context and use real life, authentic material in order to accelerate the process of acculturation to the new language environment.
