Summary/Abstract: The character of the Patriarch Vasilije Jovanovic Brkic belongs to the category of psychologically most complex heroes in the literary opus of Petar II Petrovic Njegos (1813-1851). On the one hand, he is portrayed as a gifted orator like Bishop Danilo from Gorski vijenac (Njegos 1847). On the other hand, even the irreconcilable opponents like Abbot Teodosije and Karaman-pasa are wonderously unanimous on the fact that the (allegedly) frivolous Patriarch is the victim of his own misconceptions (Njegos 1851). His - obviously - specific status in the drama structure cannot be easily explained by the author’s (dynastic) animosity towards the naive arch shepard who provided ruler’s legitimity to the fraud - Scepan Mali. Moreover, Njegos’ dramatic portrayal of the turmoilous biography of Vasilije Jovanovic Brkic (1719-1772) has never incited arduous discussions, as were the ones led in the end of the 19th century about the character of Metropolitan Vicentije Jovanovic in Laza Kostic’ drama Pera Segedinac (Kostic 1882). Because of that very fact, we shall dedicate special attention to examining the rarely-analyzed private correspondence from the second half of the 18th century, in the form of letters written by Vasilije Jovanovic Brkic and Scepan’s “diplomat of doubtful reputation - Archimandrite Avakum.
