TIHOMIR OSTOJIĆ IN THE CONTEXT OF THE NATIONAL AND ENLIGHTMENT PROGRAM OF MATICA SRPSKA

Summary/Abstract: On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Tihomir Ostojić’s birth, his work has been illuminated as strongly dedicated to the national and enlightment program, which he had introduced to Matica srpska’s programs, starting with 1892, when he became an associate in the library “Books for the people of Matica srpska“, up to 1921 when he died. His work as the Secretary of Matica srpska, the editor of Letopis and Kalendar Matice srpske, and as one of the editors of edition Books for the people have been particularly emphasized. Also, his work on recording folk tales and poems has been discussed. This part of his opus was a part of the national revival program, which was also propagated by other carriers of the revival ideas (so called “pokretaši”1) at the break between 19th and 20th centuries.
