Summary/Abstract: fairy tale is a genre which has been in favour both with children and adults for centuries. As the subject matter of scientific research fairy tales have been analyzed from various aspects, among others from the aspect of morphology (Propp) and structuralism (Levi-Strauss). However, the knowledge of their structure cannot explain the interest for this literary genre which does not wane for hundreds of years. Concerning the fairy tales of brothers Grimm, they are certainly the most famous fairy tales of all the times, but taking into account that brothers Grimm were not the first and not the only collectors of fairy tales, the question arises: Why have their tales left such a deep track in the history of the world literature and culture? The answer to this question can be found in the semantics and symbolism of the fairy tales, because they contain certain universal, everlasting messages which have been transferred through generations and secured their duration in spite of all the changes brought about by the course of time. Based on few examples, in this paper it has been pointed at the semantics and symbolism of several function carriers, and reveal the messages hidden at the archaic magical-mythical level of the fairy tales.
