Summary/Abstract: The paper is going to analyze hidden narratives which appear in the „places of prohibition^ often as a kind of contrast to an unhidden story. Unlike shadow narratives started off and left open (H.P Abbott), the hidden ones have just been signalized. In order to activate them, one should know broader context i.e. include the historical, ethnological or psychological narratives, for instance. In realism, examples of hidden narratives are plentiful. Erotic cryptograms, for example, are hidden narratives related to a sexual life (of a hero). They came as a consequence of restrictive poetics rules in realism that apply when it comes to a public life of a character. Similarly, the restrictiveness of repressive Soviet System forced D. Kharms to hide narratives related to socio-historical context behind so-called pure children’s stories. The paper is going to trace hidden narratives through a range of stories, paying special attention to the narrative function of lies, secrecy and silence.
