Summary/Abstract: Technical achievements of the mid-nineteenth century, changes concerning society, technique, health and culture of the age have led artists, theoreticians and theorists of art to put a great emphasis on questioning their familiarity in the world. This is the historical moment from which we can talk about concepts of familiarity and strangeness in the same context and with the same meanings as in our contemporary culture. I will try to outline and clarify these notions in connection with the Second Industrial Revolution, most importantly through the theories of John Ruskin, in comparison with other texts from the era of the birth of modern art.
