Summary/Abstract: In July and August 1906, Machar’s articles on ancient Greece and Rome and christianity were published in Čas (Time, magazine) – later on they were collected and published in a book. In the articles, Machar views the era of antiquity and the christian era as two sharply contrasting epochs. He sees Jesus as a day-dreamer and an idealist whose teaching would probably have had no impact on the European culture if there were no Paul of Tarsus. Machar calls for a new renaissance – “I would like to witness the rebirth of the classical culture in our country”. His arguments are often strongly emotional. Machar’s Olomouc lectures provoked sharp protests of catholic circles.
