Summary/Abstract: The paper analyses use of comparative method in the works of Bogdan Popović and shows the specific position that this method had in Popović’s approach to the study of literature. Carefully looking into Popović’s studies, paper also points the different stages in using comparative method for studying literature in works of this Serbian literary scholar. In the first stage Popović uses comparative method only for aesthetic studies, in the second stage he covertly compares works of Walt Whitman, Stefan Malerme and African sculpture with the literary works of Serbian avantgarde writers. Popović, eventually, in the third stage writes comparative study that actually analyse two poems from different national literatures.
