Summary/Abstract: By his desire to make a diptych out of La Tentation de saint Antoine, a drama, and Bouvard et Pécuchet, an encyclopaedic satirical novel, Flaubert highlights the importance of the theme of knowledge. We intend to show that by putting into fiction religious and scientific content Flaubert implies that the style, the form, is a genuine epistemological insight, different from religious and scientific knowledge. The form is determined by its difference from the erudite material treated. Flaubert enables the reader to become aware of the interpretative signals within the text pointing in this direction, their pertinence being stressed by the presence of the same motives in the two writings. Relying on irony, polyphony and parody he introduces pervasive ambiguity which serves his sceptical intention „de ne pas conclure“, his project of undermining indirectly both the claims of Christian faith and positivist science.
