Summary/Abstract: This essay is dedicated to the analysis of two important works of Roland Barthes, written at different stages of his career and seemingly quite discordant, the first being “Introduction to the Structural Analysis of Narrative“ (1966), and the second being S/Z, a brilliant reading of Balzac’s novella Sarrasine (1970). Although it is widely acknowledged that S/Z heralds Barthes’ post-structuralist perspective,we should be reminded of the decisive role of his earlier structuralist work, i.e. his exemplary analysis of narrative, which lay the groundwork for Barthes’ intricate and powerful demonstration of text’s plurality.
