Summary/Abstract: The lexical item bar(em), by which the speakers of Standard Serbian express the meaning ’at least’, is of Turkish origin. After having thrown light on the differences between the Turkish and the Serbian words bar(em), the author presents an overwiev of both — our actual knowledge and our actual ignorance of the principals according to which the occurence of bar(em) in a given Serbian sentence happens to be either allowed or precluded.
