Summary/Abstract: The author of the article set himself two main goals: to present Weigel’s fundamental ideas on the conditions of the crisis of the ecclesial community and to outline the concept of evangelical Catholicism. According to Weigel, the crisis has two basic dimensions: personal (the decline of faith and of the attitude of being a disciple) and institutional (excessive institutionalization of the Church). The crisis and postulated renewal of the Church are conditioned by Christophobia and atheistic humanism. The most important challenges faced by the Church are: concern for morality, influence on shaping the democratic order, conscious participation in civil society and the preservation of spiritual identity. In this connection, the Church demands a renewal which is under the sign of evangelical Catholicism. Evangelical Catholicism is a form of man’s communion with God and with people. His main mission is a transmission of the saving truth. This movement consists in returning to the sources of faith and the Church; it is the foundation of a deep reform, the point of reference being the personal truth – Jesus Christ.
