Summary/Abstract: This article starts by summarising the current state of knowledge regarding the Imperial Decree of 6 August 1755, which instituted the post of supervisors of university documents, thus in effect creating university archives. Then the author compares the version of the decree that was issued with its draft, kept in the Austrian State Archive. An appendix then presents an edition of the decree.
